How to Care for Gold-Tone Jewelry

Everyday habits have a major effect on the appearance of gold-tone jewellery. A few simple steps can reduce rubbing, moisture exposure and chemical contact so your pieces keep their finish for longer.

Put jewellery on last

Apply perfume, hairspray, lotion and makeup before putting on jewellery. Allow products to dry first. Spraying perfume directly onto a bracelet or necklace can affect the surface finish.

Keep it away from water

Remove jewellery before showering, bathing, swimming or using a sauna. Chlorine, salt, soap and repeated moisture exposure can dull or change a finish. Remove bracelets before washing dishes or cleaning.

Take it off for exercise and sleep

Sweat and continuous friction can accelerate wear. Clasps and links are also more likely to catch, bend or rub against hard surfaces during sport or sleep.

Clean gently

After wearing a piece, wipe it with a clean, soft, dry cloth. Do not use silver dip, metal polish, toothpaste, baking soda, rough cloths or ultrasonic cleaners unless the product instructions specifically say they are safe. Abrasive products can remove or scratch the finish.
